Leeds Commercial Ltd started business in 1957 as Carsapoint Ltd hiring cars and Lambretta scooters from the premises of the Grand Hotel garage in Harrogate and then moved to Stanningley Leeds in 1960.

In 1962 we moved to larger premises on Chapeltown Road, Leeds and changed the trading name to Leeds Commercial. We became one of the first companies in Yorkshire to hire out commercial vehicles.

In 1967, North Eastern Gas Board were looking to hire a large number of vehicles to use for converting homes to natural gas. It became clear that Leeds Commercial would need to look for significantly larger premises and so in 1969 we moved in to the The Roundhouse on Wellington Road in Leeds.

The red brick, single story roundhouse was designed and built by Scottish railway engineer Thomas Grainger, assisted by engineer John Bourne, and was in use by 1847.

The Roundhouse was designed with a single entrance track with 20 stabling bays radiating around a central turntable measuring approximately 12.75 meters (42’6”) in diameter.

By 1889 the size of locomotives had become substantially larger and over the years, since the North Eastern Railway moved out in 1904, there has been a variety of tenants, but since 1969 and through till early 2022, we were the custodians of this fantastic old building.

Each year we invited the public to view the Roundhouse during National Heritage Weekend and this proved very popular with local historians and visitors alike.

At the end of 2021 we started to move our Head Office depot from our home of over 50 years to another historic site for HGV in Leeds.

We purchased the old DVSA test station at Patrick Green and spent the last quarter of 2021 adapting the impressive site to our requirements for vehicle rental and maintenance.

OUR PRESENT & FUTURE

To this day we are still a family run business, headed up by Managing Director, Chris Miller who took over the company from his father and company founder Geoff Miller.

Chris, along with fellow directors, Paul Bumford, Gary Wilson and Leigh Margel, have continued to push forward the growth and success of the company.

In December 2013, expansion was accelerated with the takeover of Shawhire, the rental division of renowned body builders Shawtrack.

We now boast a fleet of around 2000 vehicles and we operate from 6 depots throughout the UK, our most recent acquisition being the new home of our Leeds Head Office.
